Shaq rap flap is out of control
What the hell is going on? For those of you who didn’t see it, Suns’ center Shaquille O’Neal grabbed a microphone at a New York club, and broke into a freestyle rap that mentioned, among other things, his former teammate Kobe Bryant, and his inability secure an NBA title without him. And if you haven’t seen it, take a minute to soak it all in…
[Hat Tip: TMZ.com]
Since TMZ.com posted the video on their site, all hell has broken loose. ESPN talking heads are interviewing each other about it, XTRA Sports 910 morning show host Dan Bickley pontificated about how tasteless Shaq’s rhymes were. In his online blog at AZ Central.com, Bickley even went as far as to accuse Shaq of writing and premeditating the whole lyrical attack.
Today, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has responded by revoking O’Neal’s special deputy badges issued from Maricopa County. Arpaio told the Associated Press that he doesn’t “condone this type of racial conduct”, referring to Shaq’s use of the “n-word”, and profanity.
What’s next? Nancy Grace having on panelist after panelist to discuss this heinous act of a once-great superstar that’s fallen from grace?
I’ll ask again. What the hell is going on? The most shocking development in this whole matter is that I agree with Stephen A.Smith (that hurt)! Screamin’ A says it’s no big deal, and it’s not. Unlike some people who have attacked Shaq, I won’t claim to know the inner workings of the freestyle rap world. Shaq has two platinum albums to his credit; its entirely possible that he just riffed that off the top of his head.
The only person who hasn’t responded to this is Kobe Bryant. He’s probably off somewhere giggling, and trying to concoct a “retaliation”.
I happen to think a Kobe-Shaq rivalry is good for the league, and really good for fans of the Suns. That might be the only intrigue left in a rivalry featuring two teams going in opposite directions. One question for Shaq- can you bust out a freestyle on Sheriff Joe now?
