I take the weekend off from baseball to attend a seminar and come back to find out the bullpen blew Dan Haren’s beautiful start. Not Qualls this time, Pena and Lyon. D’Backs bullpen: Equal Opportunity Start Blowers. For the time being, at least.
The curse of the modern age. Starters today generally don’t have the stamina to pitch complete games. They start wilting around 100 pitches and you’ve gotta bring in relievers and well, nobody’s perfect. They mess up from time to time and have a tendency, at least with the D’Backs, of matching each other. They are either great together or lousy together. And right now they are lousy together. Equal Opportunity Start Blowers. When I was a kid, back in the day of Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, Jim Palmer etc., starters had the stamina to go the distance when they had their game on.
