D’Backs vs Giants last weekend

July 31st, 2008

Friday: It was July, not April, so I didn’t need to eat a bowl of soup, tie my D’Backs cap down with a scarf or get wrapped up in a Giants blanket. But I still wore 7 layers: 5 coming in from Oakland, the 6th around the third or fourth inning and the 7th, appropriately enough, during the 7th inning stretch.

Dan Haren was our pitcher and he was great until he wilted a bit near the end. It was already 7-0 when he started giving it up and I was hoping he’d finish–Haren has never pitched a complete game–but it was not to be. Still, we won, comfortably.

It was really weird to watch a D’Backs game from the left field bleachers with Eric Byrnes not there. It was a little difficult for the bleacher creatures, too. They didn’t quite know what to do with Conor Jackson and there were only intermittent chants of “What the matter with Jackson? He’s a bum!” Tigger, the heckler-in-chief, was a bit more creative, complimenting Jackson on his handsomeness and urging him to “bend over and give the ladies a thrill…and some of the guys too! This is San Francisco, after all!”

Late in the game, Chris Burke replaced Jackson in left field. Tigger knows him from last year when he was with the Houston Astros. At that time, she took him to task for biting his nails in the outfield. Burke later told Tigger that his girlfriend was of the same opinion. Well, this time he was at it again, biting his nails, and Tigger got in his case immediately. Burke turned around and pointed at her, a big smile on his face. He also stopped chewing his nails.

Saturday: First pitch was at 6:05 but I got to the park at 11:45 a.m. to meet up with Byrnesie, whom I was expecting sometime around noon. Shortly after noon he came driving by in his Corvette and waved at me. He then drove across the drawbridge to a parking area and I waited for him to walk back. It’s a bit of a walk back to the ballpark from that parking area, so it was a good sign that he was willing to walk that far. I have already described our conversation in a previous post.

Tigger had predicted that with the earlier start, the weather would be nicer. But just as the game was starting, the wind started kicking up, and the temperature started going down. Still I wore only 6 layers and the scarf that I regrettably left home the night before.

Chris Burke got the start in right field that night. With Justin Upton on the DL he and Alex Romero have been splitting up duties out there. He made a fine sliding catch late in the game.

We had anticipated a great pitchers’ duel between aces Brandon Webb and Tim Lincecum, but it wasn’t quite that. Webby only brought his B or B+ game. The Giants got to him in the first inning. The D’Backs had no business winning that game. Lincecum struck out a career high 13. But, like Haren the night before, he could not finish, and they play 9 innings, not 7. Much to my delight, the Giants showed that they also have their “Equal Opportunity Start Blowers.” This night, one Todd Walker would do the job (or not do the job if you are a Giants fan).

The bleacher creatures got a little more creative with Jackson during the second game, chastising him for his hands on hips posture. Tigger also got on him about his throwing, which does indeed remind you that first basemen usually don’t make long throws. “It’s OK that you throw like a girl,” Tigger yelled. “I do, too.” She and I also had our own version of “What’s the matter with Jackson?” Our answer was “He’s not Byrnes!” (Yeah, I said it.)

Sunday: It was a 1:05 start, and I did not get there until the game was just starting. It was basically overcast but a three-layer day. It went pretty much as I expected: Randy Johnson vs. Barry Zito, a pitchers’ duel for the first three innings. But in the 4th, Zito started walking people and the D’Backs started scoring. The third game was a rout like the first. The one surprise was that Randy Johnson, who pitched seven shutout innings in his previous start, did the same this time. He allowed more hits this time, but no runs. Every time Johnson can go seven, I figure we got a bonus inning from him so to get that in two consecutive starts was a very pleasant surprise.

Poor Zito! I remember when he was in Cy Young form. But it was great to see the D’Backs finally sweep the Giants. Tigger kept telling the people around her that at least the D’Backs were keeping the Dodgers out of first. That, in itself is important to Giants fans who consider the Dodgers their arch rivals.

Webb, D-Backs take first round in L.A.

July 31st, 2008

Dodger Nation was buzzing all day leading up to tonight’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Blue Crew had picked up Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox earlier, and really didn’t have to give much up to do it. Leave it to Brandon Webb to quell that buzz.

The Diamondbacks’ right-hander scattered 6 hits and allowed only one run over 8 innings on the way to his major league-leading 15th win as the Snakes took down the Dodgers 2-1.

L.A. struck first in the 6th when Juan Pierre scored on Russell Martin’s ground out. The Diamondbacks answered with 2 runs in the 7th when Mark Reynolds doubled in Conor Jackson, and Chris Snyder’s single scored Reynolds. That’s all Webb would need…although things did get a bit hairy in the 8th inning. With runners on second and third with one out, the Dodgers’ leading home run hitter, Matt Kemp came to the plate. Kemp hit a line drive to left, which was snared by Jackson, who then threw home. The throw was off-line, but Snyder went to his left to catch the ball and lunged toward the plate, tagging out Andre Ethier and ending the Dodgers’ threat.

Brandon Lyon allowed a hit in the 9th, but got Andruw Jones to line out to Jackson to end the game. Which begs the question- why send Andruw Jones to the plate when he is representing the winning run with 2 outs in the 9th? I know Jones at one time was a clutch hitter, and as recently as two years ago had 41 homers and 129 runs batted in. But now he’s a shell of a shadow of his former self. Andruw Jones should wear a ski mask to the ballgame every day, because he is doing nothing at this point but stealing money from the Dodgers’ organization. Joe Torre is well-respected, and for good reason, but c’mon Joe, you gotta try to win the ballgame! Andruw Jones has 13 rbis more than me this season. Wasn’t Jeff Kent on the bench? By the way, Lyon picked up his 23rd save on the night.

The win stretches the Diamondbacks’ lead in the NL West back to 2 games, as they brace for the start of the Manny Ramirez era in Los Angeles.

  • D-Backs’ Webb continues domination of Dodgers [East Valley Trib/AP]
  • Arizona tops Dodgers as Webb outduels Lowe [Los Angeles Times]

  • A battle of left-handers will highlight Friday’s game, well that and the appearance of some Manny guy. Randy Johnson and his 292 career wins will take on the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw and his 1 career win. First pitch is at 7:40 PM.

Dodgers get ManRam, D-Backs get disappointment

    July 31st, 2008

I don’t know why I seem to be surprised by these kinds of days in Arizona sports.

That Diamondbacks had the chance to improve their team before the deadline and were hesitant to pull the trigger. The Dodgers on the other hand didn’t show any hesitation in picking up Manny Ramirez and his contract.

That’s right D-Backs’ fans, the team one game back of the snakes in the NL West landed a superstar.

Let that sink in for a minute. The Dodgers now have an outfield that consists of Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Juan Pierre, Andruw Jones, and Andre Ethier. Compare that to the Diamondbacks outfield that consists currently of a first baseman, a center fielder hitting sub .250 and a guy who should be in triple-A. Doesn’t quite seem fair does it?

Josh Byrnes and the front office will claim they are not only playing for this year, but building for the future and a deal didn’t fit their plans. That may be the case, but that future isn’t guaranteed. Right now they have one of the best 1-2 pitching duos in all of baseball, a solid bullpen, fan support (all be it small) based on last years momentum and what was a weak division. It was a prime time to make a move and role the dice on a World Series.

Instead the Diamondbacks rolled snake eyes (pun intended). No Texiera, Dunn, Bay or even Ibanez. Instead Tony Clark and Jon Rauch are that additions who the D-Backs hope to help lead them to the promise land.

Josh has been the golden boy so far but he better hope the young talent pans out now and in the future. If it doesn’t fans will look back at missed opportunities this season and hold him accountable.

So yet another trade deadline goes by with out a big deal. I don’t know why I expected any thing different.

Speaking of NAU, the Jacks open camp on the same day as ASU, and for the record, the new turf at the Skydome is pretty sweet. (Arizona Daily Sun)

D-Backs visit Dodgers in crucial NL West matchup, will see Ramirez

    July 31st, 2008

Extra, extra! Read all about it. The National League West has two teams above .500!

It may not seem like much of a claim, but for the first time since May 27th, the National League West has two teams with a winning record. The Diamondbacks were 30-22 and the Los Angeles Dodgers were 26-25. By winning 8 of 12 since the All-Star Break, the Dodgers have moved their record to 54-53, just one game behind the D-Backs as the two teams start a 4-game series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles tonight.

The Dodgers made a huge trade on Thursday, acquiring the always interesting Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox, in a deal that sees Boston get Jason Bay from Pittsburgh in a three-way trade. Ramirez won’t play on Thursday, but should be in the L.A. lineup for the remainder of the series. The trade poses an interesting question for an already crowded Dodgers’ outfield. Who sits? Matt Kemp is leading the Dodgers in runs batted in, Andre Ethier is an up and coming prospect who’s been decent this season, and Juan Pierre is the Dodgers’ leadoff hitter who is 2nd in the National League in stolen bases. Oh, and how can you forget Andruw Jones, who the Dodgers signed in the offseason, and finds himself in the midst of one of the most nightmarish seasons in baseball history. Jones, has 2 homers, 10 rbis and is hitting an embarrassing .167 in nearly 200 at-bats. Making it harder to put Jones on the bench is the fact that he’s making over $14 million this season. Maybe he’ll get a curious case of tendinitis to land him on the DL. My guess is Jones and Ethier will be the players relegated to spot bench duty.

The Dodgers come into the game on a high, having won 5 of their last 6, and their pitching staff has thrown 4 shutouts in their last 5 games. Last Saturday, Derek Lowe and two relievers combined on a 2-hit shutout in a 6-0 win over Washington, and on Sunday, rookie Clayton Kershaw got his first Major League win by combining with 3 members of the Dodger bullpen on a 5-hit 2-0 win over the Nats. The Dodgers also shut out the San Francisco Giants the last two nights. Jason Johnson, Chan Ho Park and Jonathan Broxton teamed up on a 5-hit blanking in a 2-0 win on Tuesday, and last night, Chad Billingsley (whom the D-Backs won’t face this weekend) spun a complete game 5-hit shutout in a 4-0 win.

The Dodgers have the top team ERA in the National League at 3.68, despite their top starter from a year ago, Brad Penny being on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis, and their closer Takashi Saito shelved with an elbow strain for at least another 4 weeks.

Offense, like for most of the teams in the division, has been a struggle. The Dodgers are hitting only .256 as a team, and are second to last in home runs. Matt Kemp leads the team in round trippers with only 12, while James Loney is the team’s leader in batting average (.298) and rbi (60).

    Pitching Matchups
Thursday: Brandon Webb (14-4, 3.14 ERA) vs. Derek Lowe (8-8, 3.74 ERA)
Friday: Randy Johnson (8-7, 4.58 ERA) vs. Clayton Kershaw (1-3, 4.53 ERA)
Saturday: Yusmeiro Petit (1-1, 2.55 ERA) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (5-8, 4.40 ERA)
Sunday: Doug Davis (4-5, 3.86 ERA) vs. Jason Johnson (1-0, 1.38 ERA)

    What else to look for…

  • Conor Jackson has been red hot since the All-Star break, hitting .431 with 4 homers and 9 runs batted in. He is the reigning National League Player of the Week.
  • D-Backs third baseman Mark Reynolds had a 2-run homer in Wednesday’s win over the Padres, but he also struck out once. Reynolds has struck out in 16 consecutive games and 20 out of his last 21. He’s already surpassed his strikeout total from a year ago, and he did it in 11 less games. He ranks third in baseball with 132 ks, trailing only Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard and Oakland’s Jack Cust.
  • Thursday’s starter, Brandon Webb is 9-3 lifetime vs. the Dodgers.
  • Dodgers’ first baseman James Loney has 4 home runs and 16 runs batted in while hitting .422 lifetime vs. Arizona

End of the Second Month Without Hockey

    July 30th, 2008

Thank goodness. 1 more month down and less than 5 weeks to go b4 we get some ‘real’ hockey. Ok, maybe not REAL, real hockey but close enough. Our Captain will be holding his usual unofficial get back in skating form camp soon, hope to see some of you there. We’ll get to see who worked out over the summer and who will be battling for their spot back due to an overindulgence in vegitating.

Every one is all abuzz about the 3rd jersey. Apparently these suckers will be mostly black and there is much speculation on just how far out in left field the logo changes will be. Some fan based drawings and some pseudo info is being bandied about:

    Haren fuels D-Backs past Padres

    July 30th, 2008

Photo: AP/Dan MillerDan Haren wasn’t the unhittable pitcher we’ve seen over the last 6 weeks or so, but he was good enough to pitch the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-3 win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Haren was greeted rather rudely actually, as San Diego center fielder Jody Gerut led off the game with a home run to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. It was the first home run Haren has surrendered since June 12th, a span of 7 straight starts. After allowing another run in the 1st, Haren settled down, and yielded 3 runs and 6 hits over 7 innings. The win was his 11th of the season, and 6th in his last 7 decisions.

Trailing 3-1, the Diamondbacks struck for 4 runs in the 5th inning off of San Diego starter Cha Seung Baek. Chad Tracy’s 2-run single highlighted the inning for Arizona. Mark Reynolds and Chris Snyder hit back-to-back solo home runs to cap the scoring in the 8th.

With one stop left on their 10-game road trip, the Diamondbacks are 5-1. The Dodgers remain on their heels in the National League West standings, trailing by just 1 game after L.A. took down San Francisc 4-0 on Wednesday.

    MLB.com : Recap | Boxscore

Here’s what others are saying about the Diamondbacks victory in San Diego on Wednesday…

  • D-Backs end Padres series with win [AzCentral]
  • Haren pitches Diamondbacks past Padres [East Valley Tribune/AP]
  • Padres err it out in 7-3 loss [SignonSanDiego]

  • And now it’s on to Los Angeles for the Diamondbacks for a big 4-game series with the Dodgers.

Pitching Matchups for Arizona at Los Angeles:
Thursday: Brandon Webb (14-4, 3.14 ERA) vs. Derek Lowe (8-8, 3.74 ERA)

    Dunn to the Diamondbacks?

    July 30th, 2008

So much for not wanting to make a move.

According to SI.com the Diamondbacks have offered Chad Tracy to the Reds for power hitting outfielder Adam Dunn.

The Diamondbacks made a play for Adam Dunn, offering first baseman Chad Tracy. Another National League team also is said to have called about Dunn, a slugger who’s drawn surprisingly little interest. Reds GM Walt Jocketty could also keep Dunn, who’s a free agent after the year. All in all, the Reds’ sale hasn’t exactly been a hit. They also have Ken Griffey Jr, who hasn’t scared up one decent rumor, plus reliever David Weathers.

Dunn would help fill the outfield void left by both Eric Byrnes and Justin Upton. He has power that would translate nicely to Chase Field and will let Conor Jackson move back to first sharing time with Tony Clark.

Dunn is batting .244 with 32 home runs, 74 RBI, .386 OBP and 106 strike outs.

Pac-10 Baseball Tournament Could Start by 2010

    July 30th, 2008

With Oregon starting to play under George Horton in 2009, there will be no excuse for the Pac-10 not to at least entertain the idea of holding an annual baseball tournament. Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com outlines some of the possible benefits of such a tournament, mainly highlighting fringe teams like Washington State who would have a better shot at the field of 64 with a decent showing in a post season tournament:

Washington, Oregon State and Washington State were snubbed from
the tournament in 2008, while California and Washington in 2007, and Washington and Washington State in 2006 are additional examples. By instituting a conference tournament, the Pac-10 would level the playing field with other power
    conferences.

"Come selection time, it's not hard to notice teams that get into the tournament because of how they play in their conference tournament," Marbut said. "If you're under .500 in our league, you're not going to get in. Having a conference tournament would only help teams in that regard."

    Leinart admits to being ‘clueless’

    July 30th, 2008

Mike Tulumello of the East Valley Tribune had an interesting blog post today. He quotes Matt Leinart saying

“I know at this point last year, I had no clue. A little bit, but really had no clue what was going on. This year, I feel like I do. I have a command of the offense.”

Nothing like your starting quarterback admitting he was clueless last year.
