BLLECCCHHH!
Yusmeiro Petit, subbing for the injured Micah Owings, pitched 6 brilliant innings (1 run on 2 hits, 4 Ks and 0 BBs) and left on the winning end of a 2-1 game. Then, after lefty-specialist Doug Slaten took care of business against Prince Fielder and Russell Branyan, the Equal Opportunity Start Blowers came in. Primus inter pares (first among equals) of the EOSB, Chad Qualls, gave up the tying run–that’s blown save number 6–and Tony Pena put Milwaukee into the lead 3-2.
Justin Upton tied the score again in the 8th with a solo homer. But in the top of the 9th, the Brew Crew took advantage of an error by first baseman Mark Reynolds, yeah, you read that right, starting first baseman Chad Tracy having been removed for a pinch hitter, to score another run.
The Diamondbacks lost 4-3.
Now, the truth is that the Equal Opportunity Start Blowers were not the whole cause of the loss. Even the error by Reynolds, who was playing first base at the major league level for the first time, was the proximate but not only cause. The real problem is the offense. Once again the Diamondbacks lost a game in which they scored less than 4 runs.
Milwaukee starter Seth McClung was off tonight. But the D’Backs scored only 1 run on 6 hits and 2 hit batsman, early in the game. And they scored 3 runs on 12 hits, whereas the Brewers scored 4 runs on 8 hits.
They were not the Snakes today, they were the LOBsters. A collective 20 runners stranded. And I’ve got a problem with all the bunting. Sure the pitcher sac bunted, and Orlando Hudson bunted for a hit, but cleanup hitter Conor Jackson sac bunting? You shouldn’t give outs away that easily, even in the National League.
But Congrats, Yusmeiro, you did your part. And J-Up, your homer gave the team a second chance. Too bad they let it it slip away. With today’s loss, they are now below .500 and only 1.5 games ahead of the Dodgers, who won today.
