A Dream Sports Day

07/3/08 6:57 AM

The big man in charge asked the group of bloggers in the Fan Sided network to post what their idea of a dream doubleheader would be.  A very interesting subject.  Being a fan of several teams, this really could have gone in many different directions.  Being a native of Phoenix, I grew up a Phoenix Suns fan.  Then the Cardinals came to town in 1988 when I was 15.  As far as my baseball interests went, I grew up a Chicago Cubs fan in and out.  No I wasn’t a Cubs fan because they were on cable.  If that was the case, I’d have grown up a huge Atlanta Braves fan too.  My dad lived in Chicago for several years while a student at Northwestern University.  He played football and baseball for them.  He was the huge Cubs fan.  Naturally I joined in the fun of being a fan of a loveable loser.   When the Arizona Diamondbacks joined the majors in 1998, it was hard to split away from my allegiance to the Cubs, so I continue to this day to be a Cubs fan, but even a bigger Diamondbacks fan.  I only root against the Cubs when they play the Dbacks.

That being said, I also love NCAA football.  I have four favorites there, University of Arizona Wildcats, Northwestern Wildcats, Northern Arizona Lumberjacks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  I got my love of Notre Dame from my wife.  So, with so many choices, what would be my dream doubleheader?  My most favorite teams are in Arizona, but my dream has always been to go to Wrigley Field and watch the Cubs.  Now why keep it at a doubleheader?  I’d rather make it a sports weekend.

It’s October.  I’d start by flying to South Bend to take in a Notre Dame football game.  Doesn’t matter who they are playing, it’s Notre Dame.  Then I’d have enough time to take a quick flight to Chicago to catch the NL Championship Series game between the Cubs and Diamondbacks.  After the game was over, I’d hop on another plane and make my way back home to Phoenix so I could get to the Cardinals game Sunday afternoon.  Now you ask why not fly back in the morning to make the Sunday afternoon game?  It’s only a 3 hour flight from Chicago to Phoenix.  Well, I can’t miss the tailgaiting.  I must have time to hang out, have a few adult beverages, brats, and hamburgers.

Now a weekend like that is not impossible.  That was a weekend that could have taken place last year, although the World Series game was a divisional playoff game instead.  Now, I just have to come up with the dough to make that happen.  There’s the real dream.
