Arizona well represented in ESPY nominations
I know, I know. The ESPY Awards handed out annually by ESPN are nothing but a gigantic commercial for the network, and a way for the sports juggernaut to brown-nose athletes from a multitude of sports. But, this is the 16th year they’ve handed the things out, so I guess they are gaining a little bit of legitimacy. Plus, Justin Timberlake is hosting this year, so there’s more credibility right there.
The state of Arizona was very well represented in the ESPY Award nominations, which were announced earlier this week.
Here’s a rundown of Arizona’s ESPY nominees:
-
Best Female Athlete
Golfer Lorena Ochoa - the number one ranked female golfer in the world, she played 2 seasons at the U of A.
Indy Car Driver Danica Patrick became the first woman to win an Indy race when she took the checkered flag at the Japan 300. Lives in Scottsdale.
-
Best Coach/Manager
Red Sox manager Terry Francona played his college ball in Tucson.
-
Best Game
Super Bowl XLII- played at UOP Stadium in Glendale.
-
Best Play
Eli Manning’s desperation throw to David Tyree in Super Bowl XLII in Glendale.
Rick Nash’s ridiculous goal to beat the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.
-
Best Finish
Spurs prevail over Suns in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals (by the way, Duncan misses that shot 99 times out of 100).
-
Best Record Breaking Performance
Former ASU slugger Barry Bonds* breaking Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record.
-
Best WNBA Player
Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi gets a nomination after leading the team to their first WNBA Championship in 2007.
-
Best Golfer
Former U of A women’s stars Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam were nominated, along with former Sun Devil Phil Mickelson. Too bad they’re all going to lose to a guy named Tiger Woods.
The ESPYs will be handed out July 20, from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

Vince has been part of the Phoenix Sports scene in a few different capacities. First as a fan, Vince has been yelling at his tv during Suns and ASU games since the late 1970's. Vince also saw the media side of things as a radio talk show host from 1996 to 2002, and then again in 2007.
