Outfielder could need surgery; catcher Snyder does not
By Mike Ritter / MLB.com
PHOENIX — Eric Byrnes’ season may be done. After tearing his left hamstring for the second time this season during a stolen-base attempt on Monday night, the Diamondbacks outfielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list, but he may end up being out for 4-6 months if he requires surgery, which is a growing possibility.
Byrnes will get a second opinion on his hamstring and D-backs manager Bob Melvin said the team will probably know within the week if surgery is Byrnes’ best option.
“Whether or not he has to have surgery will probably be the telltale,” Melvin said. “Right now, we’re still trying to figure out how severe it is in there and how far the tendon is off the bone. We will decide if surgery is the way to go or if it’s not the way to go. We’re still trying to wait on that one.”
Byrnes has not been seen in the D-backs’ clubhouse since the injury. He’s hitting just .209 and was 4-for-8 on stolen-base attempts on the season, but the 32-year-old has been battling sore hamstrings since Spring Training.
…
Hey, Byrnesie,
This report does not surprise me, given that I saw what happened as it happened. I can’t say that I like it, but being out for the rest of this year has its advantages.
The Diamondbacks are in trouble this year, with all the injuries. It is just one of those years for the team. Chris Snyder, Mark Reynolds, Augie Ojeda, Conor Jackson, Micah Owings, Chad Tracy, Edgar Gonzalez, I mean it’s been a bad year for injuries and sometimes a team has to just do the best they can for now and then wait ’til next year. So no sense trying to endure and come back when they are talking about “how far the tendon is off the bone.”
Nobody questions your heart; nobody questions your guts; And nobody can play left field like you can when you are whole. (You did win the Bill James Award last year, right?) So there is definitely a place for you next year and beyond-don’t worry about that–but only if you really heal. Don’t try to “man up” and come back in September. Trying to endure extra pain and risk injuring yourself yet again is not what a real man does. It’ll hurt not to be with the team, especially if they crawl into the playoffs. But you gotta do whatcha gotta do. Just ask O-Dog and Chad.
Coping with the long rehab of this injury will teach you a thing or two about patience, something that you also need at the plate. There will be some pluses to you being out this year, though they are hard to see right now.
Taking care of yourself is Job 1. For yourself and the team.
