Conor Jackson’s 2-run single scored Justin Upton and Orlando Hudson, capping a huge 9th inning rally, and lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Chase Field.
Milwaukee’s J.J. Hardy and Mike Cameron contributed to the Brewers’ 5-0 lead with home runs. Hardy went deep in the third off of Brandon Webb, and Cameron added a disputed 2-run shot in the 6th.
The Diamondbacks offense was dormant again, but came to life in a big way in the 9th. Milwaukee reliever Guillermo Mota started the 9th and Robby Hammock reached on an infield single. Chris Burke walked, and Augie Ojeda reached on an infield single to load the bases. Mota was then replaced by lefty Brian Shouse. Chad Tracy, a left-handed hitter, pinch-hit in the pitcher’s spot and delivered a base-clearing double to put the Diamondbacks on the board, but still trailing 5-3. Tracy had been 0 for 7 against southpaws this season before today. Milwaukee manager Ned Yost then went to the bullpen again, to closer Salomon Torres, who was pitching for the third consecutive day. Torres gave up a bloop single to Justin Upton, and Orlando Hudson doubled down the left field line which advanced Upton to third. That set the stage for Jackson’s heroics.
The blown save for Torres was his first since he took over for Eric Gagne as the team’s closer.
The win allowed the Diamondbacks to salvage a split with Milwaukee, and evened their record once again at 43-43. Los Angeles won again in Houston, so the D-Backs lead remains 1 1/2 games over the Dodgers.
Might this be the emotional win that boosts the Diamondbacks’ offense? We’ll find out. San Diego is coming to town for three games starting on Friday.
Here’s what others are saying about the Diamondbacks miraculous come-from-behind win against Milwaukee…
