ASU Athletics Report
First I want to thank the guys at AZ Sports Hub for welcoming SunDevilsDen.com to the fold.
Things are slow right now on the Sun Devil’s sports scene, but congratulations are in order for the whole Sun Devil’s athletics organization. A little over a week ago we found out the Devils placed 4th in the Directors Cup, the highest finish ever for the school.
The big news this week was Coach Dennis Erickson ending the tradition of practice at Camp Tontozona in Payson. Instead the team will stay in Tempe and make a trip to Camp T on August 16th for their annual scrimmage game.
The coaches for the National Champion Women’s Softball team were honored with the NCAA Division 1 Coaching Staff of the Year award. Head coach Cling Myers along with assistants Kristen Voak and Robert Wagner led the team to their first national championship with an11-0 win against Texas A&M.
Brett Wallace was the 13th overall player taken in this years MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Over the weekend we received an email tip from a former player and reported that Wallace was about to ink a deal with the Cards. On Tuesday that is exactly what he did. Wallace joined fellow first round pick Ike Davis in the pros. Davis, who signed a deal with the Mets more than a week ago also delivered his first 9th inning game winning hit for his Class A Brooklyn team.
The Olympics are nearing and on the first weekend of Team USA Trials two former Devils secured their spot on the team. 4-time NCAA heptathlon champion Jacquelyn Johnson secured her spot with a 2nd place finish in the trials. Former ASU long-jumper Trevell Quinley also made the team when he finished first with a personal best. Two former Devil long-jumpers Dwight Phillips and Matt Turner just missed the team when they finished 4th and 5th.
Football recruiting was quiet this week, but a lot of the top prospects spent time at USC and participated in their camp. Two of the top defensive ends in the country reside from the Phoenix area. Devon Kennard, from Desert Vista High and Craig Roh from Chaparral high both have impressed scouts. Both players have many offers, but a short list in which ASU appears on both. Standout California cornerback Osahon Irabor had good news for ASU. While Irabor has not come to a final decision yet, he has narrowed his choices down to three, ASU, U of A and Nebraska. Irabor says he will decide before the football season starts.
Senior quarterback Rudy Carpenter has a chance to end his career as the all time leader in yard and touchdowns if he can pass for 3,000 yards and 20 TDs. If he does so he will pass Andrew Walter for both records. If Carpenter does that he also could also get consideration as a Maxwell Award finalist. Carpenter, along with senior tailback Keegan Herring were both named this week as players to watch for the Maxwell Award. On the other side of the ball defensive back Troy Nolan was named as a player to watch for the Bednarik Award which is given to the top defensive player in the country.
Speaking of Walter, he was joined this week in Oakland Raiders camp by former Devil Sam Keller who will compete with Walter as a back up quarterback for the Black and Silver.
