Byrnes may avoid hamstring surgery
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
WASHINGTON — Outfielder Eric Byrnes is leaning towards taking a non-surgical approach to recovering from his torn left hamstring, but even if that were to be successful he would still likely miss the rest of the 2008 season.
Byrnes is scheduled to get another MRI taken of the injury Thursday at which time a final decision will be made.
“Unless it looks a little bit different and the tendon is farther away from the bone than what they think, there’s a good chance he’s leaning towards non-surgical too,” D-backs manager Bob Melvin said.
When asked what that meant as far as Byrnes playing again this year Melvin said, “It would probably still be close, towards the end of the year. It still could be that he misses the rest of the season either way.”
“I think either way, that’s probably the case,” Arizona GM Josh Byrnes said.

Byrnesie, please write off 2008. The last thing you or the team needs is for you to hurt yourself again trying to come back this year and then perhaps missing part of next season as well. I can certainly understand you not wanting to have surgery. Only people with certain types of mental illness WANT surgery. But if you are thinking that not having surgery means you can come back this season — Don’t think that way.
Start totally fresh in 2009, ready to lead this group all the way to the World Series Championship. I always figured it would be 2009 anyway; guys like Young, Drew, Reynolds and Upton need a few years to play together at the major league level before really getting it together. This year, the division weakened again and if the D’Backs make the playoffs it could very well be that they get bounced out in the first round. Give yourself the best possible chance to be 100% in 2009.
