The Arizona Diamondbacks got their biggest single-inning offensive output of the season in the 4th against the Philadelphia Phillies, and it was more than enough to propel them to an easy 10-4 win Saturday at Citizens Bank Park.
The fourth start out innocently enough, as Mark Reynolds flied out to left and Chris Young was retired on on a ground out to short against Phillies’ starter Adam Eaton. Alex Romero singled. Robby Hammock walked. Then pitcher Randy Johnson, a career .125 hitter coming into the game, doubled down the left field line to make it 4-2 Arizona. Television replays showed Eaton rolling his eyes as the ball landed fair. The hit parade then continued. Stephen Drew walked. Conor Jackson followed with an rbi double. Orlando Hudson was intentionally walked. R.J. Swindle then relieved Eaton. That didn’t change anything as far as the Diamondbacks were concerned. Chad Tracy knocked in 2 more with a single, followed by a 3-run homer by Reynolds. Young then singled, and mercifully the inning came to an end when Romero flied out to center field. The damage in the inning: the Diamondbacks sent 12 batters to the plate, including 9 in a row who reached base. The D-Backs posted 8 runs, on 6 hits and 3 walks. Who said this team couldn’t hit? (That was sarcasm).
Randy Johnson won his second straight decision, after dropping 6 in a row. The Unit went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits. It was his 290th career win, leaving him just ten victories short of the magical #300. Leo Rosales and Micah Owings closed out the ball game combining on 3 innings of hitless relief.
Shane Victorino was the only highlight for Philadelphia. The Phillies’ center fielder went 3 for 3 with 2 home runs in the ball game.
Here’s what others are saying about the Diamondbacks’ dismantling of the Phillies…
The 3-game series and the first half of the season come to a close tomorrow as Brandon Webb faces Cole Hamels in a premier pitching matchup in Philadelphia. First pitch is at 10:35 am Arizona time.
