Pat Burrell cracked a 3-run home run in the 8th inning off of Diamondbacks’ reliever Chad Qualls, breaking a 2-2 tie, and fueling the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-2 victory Sunday at Citizens Bank Park.
Brandon Webb started the game for Arizona, and once again pitched well, going 7 innings while allowing 7 hits and 2 runs and striking out 6. He left the ball game in a 2-2 tie. Qualls came in and gave up the go-ahead homer to Burrell, and later in the 8th, another dinger to Pedro Feliz which provided the winning margin for Philly. The Diamondbacks led 2-1 until Jimmy Rollins tied the score in the 7th inning with an rbi double off of Webb.
A trip to hitter friendly Citizens Bank Park seemed to shoot a little energy into the Diamondbacks offense, as expected. They scored 18 runs and had 39 hits in the 3 games. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Phillies still won 2 out of the 3 games, and the Diamondbacks bullpen is really showing signs of breaking down. The bullpen blew two different leads in the final game of the Washington series, and couldn’t hold leads or preserve ties in the Philadelphia series. Qualls, with today’s loss, falls to a very disappointing 2-7 on the season.

Here’s what others are saying about the Phillies win over the Diamondbacks…
The series concludes the first half of the season. The Diamondbacks are 47-48 and despite playing less than inspired baseball for much of the first half, lead the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West by 1 game. Only Brandon Webb and Dan Haren will represent the Diamondbacks at the All-Star Game in New York on Tuesday. The post All-Star schedule gets underway Friday, when they host the Dodgers at Chase Field.
