Tickets Tickets Tickets!!!

07/18/08 1:24 PM

The Cardinals announced that single-game tickets are going to go on sale to the general public on Saturday July 26th, a week from tomorrow.  If you are a season ticket holder, you will have special privileges on Friday July 25th to purchase single-game tickets.  I was expecting the announcement to come soon since tickets normally go on sale in late July.

What I didn’t expect was the Cardinals to go all greedy on us.  Get this, if you would like to attend the Dallas Cowboys game on October 12th, then you must purchase a ticket for the pre-season game on August 7th against the New Orleans Saints as well.  The Cardinals are calling it the “Protect the Nest” promotion.  Now, before I completely bash the plan, I do understand the Cardinals have a business to run and are trying to get fans in the seats for the pre-season contests.  However, I have a few reasons why this is not a good idea in warming up to fans.

First of all, Dallas will sell out anyways on it’s own.  I think this is part of the thinking behind this as well.  Someone might think twice ( I know I would), about purchasing tickets for this game if they know they also have to purchase tickets for the New Orleans game.  This might open up opportunities to those who really want to see the Cowchips in action.  However, I know there are many people who aren’t in a position to buy tickets to more than one NFL game a season, pre-season or not.  Frankly, I think it stinks they are forcing the fans to buy tickets for the New Orleans game.

Secondly, have you checked out the starting time of that New Orleans game?  Yeah, that would be 5:00 pm on a Thursday.  Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, however I do have a job to go to.  For me, it’s an hour trip in rush hour over to the other side of the valley, as I work in Scottsdale.  I’d have to give myself extra time to get over there and I sure am not going to go and not tailgate either.  A lot of us work regular 8am-5pm hours.  Of course I know many of you don’t, but I think you get what I’m saying here.  So, in addition to spending the extra money to go to the New Orleans game, I also have to eat a few vacation hours at work in order to attend.

Tickets for the Dallas game also will not be available via Ticketmaster.  You have to go through the Cardinals themselves to purchase tickets for this two-game plan.  So, now we’ve added in another obstacle.  Essentially, the ones getting jobbed here are the fans.  I do like the fact this would eliminate more Cowboys fans in Dallas getting their grubby hands on tickets for the game, but it also excludes myself.

I will of course continue to be a fan of the team.  They treated me well when I worked with them and some of those I worked with are still doing a great job for the organization.  I just don’t think they’d looked at the big picture here.  Do they care what I think?  I’m guessing not.  I do hope someone within the organization though realizes while this is a good business plan short term, it may cause them to alienate some fans in the long run.  With season ticket sales down and this probably being the last “honeymoon” season at University of Phoenix Stadium, I would hope they would be doing more to attract fans besides having them spend more money.

Go Cards!
