“Equal Opportunity Start Blowers” Strike Again!
What should have been a sweep OF the Dodgers was very nearly a sweep BY the Dodgers. Arizona’s own “Equal Opportunity Start Blowers” snatched defeat from the jaws of victory Friday night–the D’Backs lost 8-7 in 11 innings after leading by as much as 6-3 early on; the Dodgers scored the tying run in the 7th. In a previous post, I said I wasn’t going to call them “Equal Opportunity Start Blowers” for Friday’s effort because starter Doug Davis only lasted 3 innings, but he left winning and the tying run was given up in the 7th. And I’m feeling less charitable today in light of what happened the rest of the weekend.
On Saturday, the EOSB very nearly ruined Dan Haren’s 7-inning shutout effort by letting the Dodgers score 2 in the 9th. Fortunately, the D’Backs owned 3 runs by that time. What they failed to do Saturday, they accomplished on Sunday. Starter Brandon Webb gave up only one run in 8 innings only to have closer Brandon Lyon give up 5 earnies on 5 hits.
The D’Backs were up 3-1 when I left for work. They were up 4-1 heading into the top if the 9th when I got to work. Perhaps it was best for my blood pressure that both browsers at my work station would not open MLB.com. But I took that as the bad omen that it turned out to be. The final score was Dodgers 6 - D’Backs 5.
Everybody who is starting to get flashbacks of 2006, please raise your hand. Yeah, I thought so.
Some good notes: Stephen Drew, batting lead-off, went 4-5 with 1 RBI and 1 Run. And Chris Snyder came back from the DL to throw out Nomar attempting to steal second and to execute a suicide squeeze to bring in Mark Reynolds. Nice to have you back, Chris!
But the irony is not lost on me that the D’Backs dropped two games in which they scored more than 4 runs.
