Diamondbacks punish Cubs 9-2
Monday night, hits and runs were hard to come by for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tuesday they were a lot easier to come by. Conor Jackson, for the second time in this home stand, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to get the offensive wheels turning, and the D-Backs cruised past the Cubs 9-2 at Chase Field.
Jackson also added a 2-run double in the 8th inning, and ended the night going 3 for 5 with 3 runs batted in.
Yusmeiro Petit, taking Micah Owings’ turn in the starting rotation, was solid again for manager Bob Melvin. Petit scattered 3 hits and allowed just 1 run over 5 innings in gaining his first victory of the season. The bullpen picked up where Petit left off, allowing 1 run in 4 innings while striking out 6 Cubs’ batters. Newly acquired right-hander Jon Rauch made his Diamondbacks debut, pitching a scoreless 9th inning, while fanning 2.
The win may have been costly for Arizona, though. Second baseman Orlando Hudson, who homered in the ballgame, was hit in the right ankle by a pitch by Chicago reliever Kevin Hart in the 8th inning. Hudson stayed down for a few moments, and was helped off the field by the Diamondbacks’ training staff. He was unable to put any weight on the ankle. Augie Ojeda finished Hudson’s at-bat, and drove in a run with a groundout.
Second straight win for the D-Backs over the Cubs, and paired with a Dodgers’ loss in Colorado, the Diamondbacks are once again all alone atop the National League West by a full game.
Here’s what others are saying about the D-Backs domination of the Cubs…
The Diamondbacks will go for the 3-game sweep over the Cubbies Wednesday night at Chase. Bob Melvin will send lefty Doug Davis to the mound to face Cubs’ southpaw Ted Lilly. First pitch is at 6:40 PM.
