Cardinals Fighting to Keep Cowboy Fans Away
The Arizona Cardinals are making an effort to keep/gain a home field advantage. The means of doing this are a bit unusual. As we all know when the Dallas Cowboys come to town it’s pretty much a home game for them. So the Cardinals are requiring fans who want to buy the Cowboys game on October 12th to also buy the August 7th preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints.
This rule was supposedly created so there wasn’t more Cowboy fans than Cardinal fans during the October 12th meeting. But I think we’d all have to be very naive to think this wasn’t about money and selling more tickets to an exhibition game that not many people want to see. Looking at it from the perspective of the Cardinals ownership it makes sense because they get more money and they keep a couple extra Cowboy fans out of University Of Phoenix Stadium.
I’m no expert on the study of Cowboy fans and ticket sales but I’d have to think they’re going to buy tickets somehow someway. If they have to buy the extra ticket and throw it away they’ll do it, if they have to go to Stubhub and buy a ticket from a Cardinals fan they’ll do it. When the Cowboys are in town their fans will show up to the game and there’s no stopping them. In fact, this new rule will probably add more Cowboy fans to the seats than Cardinal fans. Think of it this way… Cardinal fans can go to a game anytime during the season without buying the extra preseason ticket, so they’ll just say “forget about it, we’ll go to the next game.” Cowboy fans that live in Arizona will only have one chance to see the Cowboys play, so they’re going to buy the ticket no matter what it cost. They won’t care about the preseason ticket, Cowboy fans will probably just give it to a friend or throw it away.
Ultimately, this idea won’t do anything as far as gaining a home field advantage for the Cowboys game. But I do think there will still be plenty of Cardinals fans at the game making a lot noise and causing plenty of problems for the Dallas Cowboys. An example of this would be the Pittsburgh Steelers game last year when there was half a stadium of gold and black, but in the end it was the Cardinals fans that were tearing down the building with their noise. If things are going well for Arizona by week 6, the Cardinal fans could own that game just like they did the Steelers game.
On the subject of the stadium and the tickets, I recently visited University of Phoenix Stadium to look into upgrading my season tickets for this up and coming season. Account Executive of ticket sales Steve Carlson was very helpful and very kind to show me around the stadium. For the first time I was able to sit in different seats and observe different views. I have to say there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. It’s a great place to watch a game and us Cardinal fans are lucky to have a stadium like it.
Some people are criticizing the Cardinals for not selling out the season tickets, But I think it’s still a nice accomplishment that they’re only a couple thousand away. Steve Carlson was telling me in the old days in Sun Devil stadium they’d try and sell season tickets at the gate before the first game. I’d say things have come a long way for an organization that was only filling a forth of the stadium just a few seasons ago.
Lets be real, if the Cardinals win a few games in a row or have one nice season everyone will jump on the bandwagon and get season tickets again regardless of how the economy is doing. The Cardinals built the stadium, and the people are going to continue to come.
