Rambling While on Pain Meds
For the last 4 days I have been struggling w/ unspecified pain in my neck and upper shoulder. It frakin HURTS! After reading some various comments around the net about certain hockey players not deserving the money they are getting paid I just wanna say WTF?
On a scale of 1 - 10 I hurt like a mutha. So I take it easy, pass off any physical work to others and generally pretend not to have a right side. I see my Chiropractor and take my meds and chill as much as possible. My company doesn’t pay me enough to take this kinda of punishment. (Hell I’m not sure there is enough money in the world to make me lift/pull or push weight w/ this kind of pain)
Consider Shane Doan, he gets paid a hellofa lot more than I do. When he hurts, he doesn’t get to pass off the physical work. Nor does he get to take it easy and pretend. The Donors, Morris’, Carcillos and Kapanens of Coyotes hockey earn every dime of their paychecks.
Hockey players make a lot of money. They NEED to make a lot of money. Most of their careers won’t last 10 years and at the end of it they won’t be in any shape to do most other jobs due to former injuries accumulated in the line of duty.
How many people do you personally know that will continue to work with a broken hand? Who will do physical labor the same day, hell, the same hour! that they broke their nose or took an elbow to the eye? Who will willingly go toe to toe w/ someone 3 - 4 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than them (some1 sober and sane)? while wearing a knee brace to protect a severed MCL/ACL?
Playin through the pain is a way of life to these warriors. Leaving it all on the ice takes on a whole new meaning. My hat is off to my guys. People make light of the TQs, who train themselves to stand in front of, NAY! to step in front of a 90 miles an hour frozen rubber disk, getting let go. Matti did everything he could to make himself a spot and to keep it (too bad sniping ability can’t really be taught or this kid would’ve been a pearl beyond price).
Sure its just a game… right up until skate meets jugular, vertebrae meet snapping point. Even if I had the talent and skill to do what they do… I don’t know if I have the heart to take the punishment day in and day out. Its about more than the money for sure. Gotta love this sport and the players that give their heart and soul to it.
Just a thought.
