The Detroit Shock of the WNBA are getting a lot of publicity this week. First, for a rare bench-clearing brawl with the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday night, that resulted in 5 of their players and an assistant coach getting suspended.
Now, they’re generating their own, by signing Basketball Hall of Famer, and former Mercury player Nancy Lieberman to a 7-day contract. (You read that right- 7 days! No word on whether there’s a team or player option for another week…) Lieberman will actually play tonight when the Shock take on the Houston Comets. Lieberman hasn’t played since 1997, with the Mercury, when at age 39, she averaged 2.6 points per game. At that point, she was already the oldest player in league history.
Heck, with half of the team suspended, and Cheryl Ford out for the season with a knee injury, Lieberman could get about 35 minutes tonight.
She is undoubtedly the most spry 50-year old woman since Sally O’Malley, or the chick in the purple bikini from the Total Gym infomercial. Who is Sally O’Malley?
With flexibility like that, you know she’s probably a good defender. Besides, Bruce Bowen shouldn’t be the only basketball player to be able to kick while playing ‘d’.
