Following a 3-game weekend sweep over the Giants in San Francisco, the headed down the coast to open up a 3-gamer in San Diego. It didn’t go well for the Diamondbacks, namely starter , who was roughed up by the Padres in an 8-5 loss.

Owings lasted only 3 innings, giving up 6 hits and 8 earned runs in the loss. He yielded two home runs, the first a two-run shot to light-hitting shortstop Khalil Greene in the first inning. After put the Diamondbacks ahead with a 2-run blast off of Padres’ starter Greg Maddux in the 3rd inning, the Padres bounced back with 6 runs in their half of the third. Kevin Kouzmanoff started it with a 2-run single, Jody Gerut added an rbi double, and former Arizona Wildcat Nick Hundley capped the inning with a 3-run homer to make it 8-3.

Owings has been awful as of late for manager . He’s lost his last 7 decisions, his last victory coming May 25th against the Braves. Owings, who was making his first start since July 9th, has an ERA of 9.00 in his last 8 starts. After his last victory, back in May, Owings was 6-2 with a 3.73 ERA. After tonight’s dreadful performance, his record is 6-9, and his ERA has ballooned to 5.93. He’s really been the only weak spot in a rotation including Dan Haren, Brandon Webb, Randy Johnson and .

On the other side of the coin, future Hall-of-Famer Greg Maddux registered his first victory since May 10th. The veteran right-hander went 5 innings, allowing 9 hits and 4 runs on the night.
