No Mark Teixeira, no problem.
At least that’s what Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes seems to believe.
In an interview with Sportsline.com’s Scott Miller, Byrnes expressed that the Diamondbacks don’t really have a plan b now that Teixeira is a member of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (insert name joke here).
“We believe in our club. The two trades we’ve made (acquiring reliever Jon Rauch and first baseman Tony Clark) have helped us. We’re always busy on the phones, but if I had to guess, we won’t make a deal.”
An interesting position for a general manager of a team only two games over .500 to take. The quote obviously could be posturing but if you believe the MLB rumor mill the D-Backs aren’t currently inquiring about any players.
Standing pat may very well be the safest option for the snakes. It won’t mess with the teams chemistry this year (not that you can mess with something that hasn’t been there in months). It also won’t put them in a position to give up prospects for a player who will don sedona red for just two months.
The problem is the safe route often is the one that leads to the most disappointment. If the D-Backs are serious about winning a world series than it’s worth taking a risk that could lead to the ultimate reward (no not a night with Marissa Miller but a championship ring).
With a pitching staff that is loaded including Webb, Haren and Johnson and a re-tooled bullpen they are in a good position to win the West. Add a outfield bat to the mix (Jason Bay anyone?) and they could be in a great position to win it all this year and be in a good situation for years to come.
