Brandon Webb allowed 1 run over 6 innings and delivered a 2-run double leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-1 win over the Atlanta Braves Sunday at Chase Field.
Webb earned his major league-leading 17th win as the D-Backs avoided a 4-game sweep.
The Diamondbacks jumped on Atlanta starter Mike Hampton early, putting up 3 runs in the first inning. Mark Reynolds drove in 2 with a double, and Chris Young tacked on an rbi single. Chris Snyder made it 4-0 with a solo homer in the 2nd, and Webb closed the scoring with his double in the 4th. The Braves only run came in the 6th when Omar Infante’s sacrifice fly scored Chipper Jones.
The Diamondbacks also got bad news on Sunday when they learned that second baseman Orlando Hudson is out for the year after having surgery on his left wrist Saturday night. Hudson injured his left thumb last season, when he missed the last 21 regular season games, and all 7 postseason contests. Jeff Salazar was called up from Tucson to take Hudson’s place on the roster. Augie Ojeda becomes the Diamondbacks’ primary second baseman, and expect utility man Chris Burke to see time there as well.
The D-Backs win plus the Dodgers loss to the Giants keeps Arizona in first place in the National League West by a game and a half.
Here’s what others are saying about Brandon Webb shutting down the Atlanta Braves…
Monday is an off day for the Diamondbacks. They’ll start a 6-game road trip Tuesday at Colorado.
