“It’s the Cardinals and the Chiefs in the Octagon!”

The Arizona Cardinals have announced their preseason broadcast personnel for the season. Former Cardinal center and Valley talk-show host Bill Lewis will handle the color commentary. And handling the play-by-play call will be none other than Mike Goldberg.

Yes, that’s the same Mike Goldberg who announces all the action of UFC. No, not USC football, but UFC, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. That’s versatility. One weekend, you call the describe Georges St. Pierre taking a 5-round decision from Jon Fitch, and the next weekend, you describe the action of Brian St. Pierre throwing the football in the 2nd half against the Chiefs.

I’m not making fun of the choice, I happen to think Goldberg is a pro, I enjoy his work a lot on UFC broadcasts. And I’m glad the Cardinals’ have finally tapped a local announcer to call their preseason games. According to his Wikipedia profile, Goldberg lives in the Valley. After listening to Brian Davis, who was imported from Seattle, puke his way through the last couple of preseasons, Goldberg’s style will be a welcome change.

And in case you’re wondering, Goldberg’s UFC broadcast partner Joe Rogan will not be joining him on the Cards’ broadcasts in any capacity. It definitely would have made the preseason drudgery a little more exciting to have it peppered with screaming, f-words, and accusations of comedians who steal material.
