OK, it’s not quite hell freezing over but Ivan Maisel does make some interesting Pac-10 predictions.

Maisel makes “5 Pac-10 Predictions” over at ESPN.com and the list includes a prediction about both an UofA. The one isn’t surprising at all.

Arizona State will be a disappointment.

How Dennis Erickson coached last season’s team to a 10-3 record and a Pac-10 co-championship should be the subject of a Ph.D thesis. But the Sun Devils don’t have as potent a mixture of talent and experience (five players drafted last April) as in 2007.

Nothing earth shattering there. plays a tough schedule and they didn’t fare well against top opponents last season. A less than stellar finish by the Sun Devils in no way would shock me.

His prediction about Arizona however would shock even the most sane of fans.

Arizona will start the season 6-0.

Don’t get too excited. The first six games include only two bowl teams (at New Mexico, at UCLA), both of which lost a lot from last season. It took coach Mike Stoops five seasons, but he finally got a schedule that will lend a hand. Just in time to save his job, too.

If the Wildcats find a way to start 6-0 I’ll be completely flabbergasted (yes that’s right I pulled out the thesaurus to find another word for shocked) and I will declare Ivan Maisel the smartest man on earth, that is if electronics still work during the new ice age.

I can only imagine what the Arizona football world would be like if UofA started 6-0 and struggled…oh wait I know what it would be like because Arizona sports fans experienced it in basketball this year.

Here’s to hoping we can crown Ivan Maisel smartest man on earth as of October 12th.
