Ranking the NFC West based on summer movies

By Greg Esposito, August 18th, 2008 2:00 PM

1) Arizona Cardinals

Movie: The Incredible Hulk

Rating: 3 1/2 Stars (9-7, Division winner)

Biggest Strength:Poor track record gives the opportunity for a surprise result

Biggest Weakness: All action but at times lacks the main keys to success (running game/defense for the Cards, story telling for the Hulk).

Outlook: We’ve all seen versions of both before and no matter the expectations they always seem to disappoint (see the 2003 version of the Hulk or any rendition of the Arizona Cardinals with the exception of 1998). The movie found the right combination with veterans Edward Norton and Liv Tyler turning in solid performances and a better than director. The Cardinals have that with veterans Anquan Boldin, , , and head coach Ken Whisenhunt. They will turn in solid performances, over come their weaknesses and this underperforming franchise will find a resurgence.

2)

Movie: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Rating: 3 stars (8-8)

Biggest Strength: Staying power. They have been around and reliable for years. You know what to expect from them.

Biggest Weakness: Aging cast and waning ability.

Outlook: Both Aging franchises that somehow manage to field a respectable product. Both are on their last legs even with the addition of new blood (Julius Jones for the hawks, Shia LaBeouf for Indiana Jones). Watch out for the surprise ending (Spoiler alert: Hawks don’t make the playoffs and Indy encounters aliens, both seem crazy but both occur).

3) San Francisco 49ers

Movie: Speed Racer

Rating: 2 stars (6-10)

Biggest Strength: Visionary directors, Andy Wachowski Speed Racer and Mike Martz 49ers, both know how to push things to the limit with stunning visuals. Wachowski did it with the Matrix and Martz did it at the helm of the “greatest show on turf” with the Rams.

Biggest Weakness: Neither Wachowski or Martz have the right pieces in place to relive former glory.

Outlook: A name people recognize but a no name guy in the lead role (J.T. O’Sullivan for the 49ers, Emile Hirsch for Speed Racer) and no real star power. Couple that with the fact that this isn’t your fathers version (Speed Racer or 49ers) and fans will find nothing but complete disappointment.

4) St. Louis Rams

Movie: The Love Guru

Rating: 1/2 Star (4-12)

Biggest Strength: …found someone to spend millions on what will more than likely be a complete failure

Biggest Weakness: Everything. Neither the movie or the Rams can execute on the simplest of tasks

Outlook: Both the movie and the team are trying to live off of the past. The guys in the leading roles (Mark Bulger and Mike Myers) and their acts are growing old and the effort is so sad it’s not even laughable.
