The Skinny: Adam Dunn hit his first home run as a Diamondback, and Tony Pena bailed out Brandon Lyon in the 9th inning, as Arizona hung on to beat San Diego 7-6. The D-Backs jumped on San Diego starter Josh Banks early, putting up four runs in the first. Arizona added two more on Dunn’s blast in the 6th, and Conor Jackson’s rbi single gave the Snakes a 7-3 lead in the 7th. But the Padres wouldn’t quit, putting up 3 runs in the 9th. Adrian Gonzalez had a bases loaded single which knocked in two runs, and Chase Headley followed with an rbi single of his own, making it 7-6. Brandon Lyon couldn’t finish the 9th, and was replaced by Tony Pena, who retired Nick Hundley on a fielder’s choice and got Luis Rodriguez to fly out to center to end the ballgame.
Diamondbacks’ Player of the Game: We’ll give it to Doug Davis, the D-Backs’ starter who had been atrocious in his last three starts. Tuesday, Davis looked in command, yielding just 2 runs and 7 hits over 6 innings to improve his record to 5-7. Honorable mention to Dunn, who hit his first home run as a member of the Diamondbacks.
Numbers: Diamondbacks’ third baseman Mark Reynolds struck out twice Tuesday vs. San Diego. He has struck out in 26 of 30 games played after the All-Star break….The Diamondbacks have had at least a share of first place in the NL West consecutively for 119 games.
Repercussions: The Diamondbacks’ win, along with the Dodgers loss to Colorado gives Arizona a 1-game lead in the National League West.
Here’s what others are saying about the Diamondbacks’ win over the Padres…

The series continues Wednesday night with a great pitching matchup at Chase Field, with Dan Haren throwing for the D-Backs, against San Diego ace Jake Peavy. First pitch is at 6:40 PM.
