The Skinny: If I was a gambling man, I would have bet my house that a pitching matchup between Arizona’s Dan Haren and Jake Peavy of the Padres would have resulted in a 1-0 or 2-1 game. Thank goodness I’m not much of a gambler. Instead it turned into a wild affair that stood at 4-3 after one inning. The Diamondbacks took advantage of 8 bases on balls en route to an 8-6 victory at Chase Field on Wednesday night. The Padres put up 4 runs in the first inning off of Haren, who came into the game ranked 7th in the league in ERA. The Diamondbacks answered with three in the bottom of the inning, all on Adam Dunn’s 3-run homer. Chris Snyder homered in the 2nd to tie the score. Later in the 2nd, Conor Jackson knocked in two with a single and gave the D-Backs their first lead, which they would not relinquish.
A changing of the guard?: Jon Rauch worked the 9th for his first save as a Diamondback, and 18th on the season. But manager Bob Melvin quelled any talk of Rauch becoming the regular closer, saying that Wednesday was a regular day off for Brandon Lyon, and he would be the closer for tomorrow’s game vs. the Padres.
Numbers: Haren improved his record to 14-6 with the victory, despite giving up a season-high 11 hits in the game. Haren has allowed 10 or more hits in two of his last 3 starts…The Diamondbacks scored 8 runs on the night, and only totaled 6 hits. They did draw 8 walks in the ballgame, 4 of which scored. The D-Backs have drawn a total of 18 walks in the first two games of the series.
Diamondbacks’ Player of the Game: Jackson’s rbi single gave the Diamondbacks the lead, but the honor goes to Adam Dunn, whose presence has had a profound effect on the D-Backs’ offense. Dunn went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored, 2 walks and 3 runs batted in. Dunn is hitting .307 for the Diamondbacks, and has drawn 11 walks in his first 8 games.
Here’s what others are saying about the Diamondbacks’ wild win over the Padres…
The Diamondbacks have broom in hand, and will try to complete the sweep tomorrow at Chase Field, with ace Brandon Webb going for his 19th win. He’ll be faced by San Diego rookie Chad Reineke, who will be making just his 2nd big league start. First pitch is at 6:40.
