I was wrong, Kurt Warner should be the Cardinals starter.
That’s not only what Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt should say, but it’s what I’ve had to admit around the office all day.
Last week I spent time and energy championing Matt Leinart as the answer to the Cardinals’ quarterback question. I’m no longer convinced of that.
That’s right, I was wrong, which isn’t the first time and most certainly won’t be the last. Just ask my family.
My argument was predicated on the fact that Leinart is the future, and the only way to keep the quarterback carousel that has plagued the Cardinals for years from continuing was to embrace Matt Leinart as the starter. With play like Saturday’s though, a few more times around on that carousel might not be a bad thing.
Everyone said to me “The NFL is a win now league and the only thing that matters is the playoffs this season”. I laughed at the idea citing the 1998 season as evidence. The year was great because the Cardinals made the playoffs but they disappeared back into mediocrity the season after. If anything, prolonged success was the key and starting Leinart gave them a chance.
Oops. A 4-for-12, 3 interception, 2.8 quarterback rating performance showed me the error of my ways. I haven’t changed my stance that prolonged success is the key, but it’s time to wonder if Hollywood Matt is the guy to get it done.
Leinart’s reason for his Bay area blunder?
“If it was mental, where I was completely lost and completely unprepared, then it would be something where I need to figure out what’s going on,” he said. “But that’s not the case. You just move on; that’s in the past.”
If it’s not mental that means Matt doesn’t think he possessed the physical skills to get the job done on Saturday. That scares me a lot more than having an off day mentally.
It begs the question, is his collar bone fully healed? If it’s not than it becomes the biggest issue of all. If he can’t physically throw he’s worthless, or Chad Pennington.
Between poor performances, injuries, off season photos and excuses Leinart has yet to prove he can lead this team.
As Denny Green said “Who the hell takes the third game of the preseason like B@$$S@$, B@$$S@$….the starters played three quarters”. Apparently Leinart’s physical skills did.
Saturday created more question than it answered.
The one question it did answer is who should be the starter. Kurt Warner. So yes I was wrong.
