You have to start to wonder if Randy Johnson will ever get to 300 wins. He’s not really receiving much support from his teammates lately either. More evidence of that was Wednesday in San Diego, when Johnson left after 7 innings with a 4-3 lead. Chad Qualls came in and gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the eighth, costing Johnson another win.

Time is running out for Johnson to get to 300 in 2008, and it is running out quickly.

In August alone, Johnson has had two brilliant starts that ended in losses. On August 6th, Johnson allowed only 2 runs over 7 innings, and lost to Pittsburgh, as the offense managed 2 hits against Jeff Karstens, who was making his 2nd National League start of the season. On August 17th, Johnson’s teammates managed only 2 hits against Houston’s Roy Oswalt in a 3-0 loss. And on the 22nd, Randy dominated, allowing only 1 earned run and striking out 13 in 7 innings against Florida, only to see Jon Rauch allow 2 runs in the top of the 8th in a 5-4 loss to the Marlins.

Add in Wednesday’s bullpen meltdown, and that’s 4 more wins that Johnson could have had this month alone. That would bring him to 298 wins. On five other occasions this season, Johnson has allowed 3 runs or less in a start, and lost the game. At different times, the offense, the defense, and the bullpen have let down the Unit.

It’s a shame to see a brilliant pitcher overcome injuries late in his career in a quest to become quite possibly the last pitcher to reach the 300-win milestone, and get zero help from his teammates. It’s beginning to feel like the 300 win milestone isn’t the only accomplishment that is slipping away. Another division title might be slipping away with it.
