Finally! Brandon Webb has become only the third pitcher in Diamondbacks’ history to win 20 games in a season. (Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling are the others). He threw 8 innings of shut-out ball, 98 pitches total, at the Cincinnati Reds. I would have liked to have seen him complete the effort, but as the score was only 1-0 at the time, Bob Melvin had other plans.
Webb was due up first in the bottom of the eighth, so he was lifted for pinch-hitter Jeff Salazar, who tripled. When the inning was over, the D’Backs were up 3-0, thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.
Then Brandon Lyon came in and instead of a roar, we got a plaintive meow. He allowed two runs to score before Chad Qualls came in to get the last out with the go-ahead run at third.
The bottom line is that Webby finally has his 20th win. Good Going! May you do it again…and again…and again…
