Haren baffles Giants in 2-0 win

By Vince Marotta, September 16th, 2008 9:30 PM

The Skinny: Dan Haren will turn 28 years old tomorrow. On Tuesday night, he gave himself and of the an early gift. Haren pitched his first ever complete game shutout, and tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts, as the D-Backs won their 2nd straight over the Giants 2-0 at Chase Field. Haren, who had only 5 complete games in his previous 151 big league starts, threw 117 pitches, and worked his way out of a jam in the 9th, striking out potential go-ahead run Travis Ishikawa with two runners on base.

Goin’ solo: The Diamondbacks’ offense once again all came from home runs. connected on a solo shot in the 3rd inning off of San Francisco starter Matt Cain, and left the yard in the 6th inning. All of the Diamondbacks’ runs in the last three games (it’s only 6 of them) have come from home runs. In fact, the Diamondbacks haven’t had a run-scoring hit other than a home run since last Friday, when drove in David Eckstein with a single in the 6th inning of a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. That is a streak of 39 straight innings.

Another streak intact: went 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts. Reynolds, who leads the Diamondbacks with 92 runs batted in, hasn’t driven in a run in 12 straight games. Once a shoo-in to become only the 5th player in Diamondback history to drive in 100 or more runs in a single season, now will have to get hot to do it. Reynolds needs 8 rbis in the Diamondbacks’ last 12 games to reach the mark. Luis Gonzalez, Matt Williams, Jay Bell and Steve Finley are the four Diamondbacks to have reached the 100-rbi plateau.

Repercussions: The suddenly red-hot Dodgers beat Pittsburgh again, keeping their lead in the National League West at 4.5 games heading into Wednesday’s play.
