Bertrand Berry may have set an NFL record for the most consecutive seasons tearing a muscle. His streak has hit a Ripken-esque 4 years now as the Cardinals announced Thursday that Berry has a torn groin muscle (cringing), and will be out indefinitely.
In 2004, Berry had a great season, his first in the desert. He registered a career-high 14.5 sacks, and became the first Cardinal to don the team’s new logo, when he wore it at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu following the ‘04 campaign.
Then, the bad luck started. Berry missed 8 games in ‘05 with a torn pectoral muscle, 6 games the next season with a torn triceps muscle, and 7 games last year with another torn triceps.
Coming into this season, Berry took a massive pay cut to stay with the Cardinals, and prove his worth to the team despite his unlucky injury history. He was off to a productive start this season with 3 sacks in 3 games, and then the injury bug bit him again. Travis LaBoy, Clark Haggans and Chike Okeafor will rotate in the pass-rushing linebacker spot.
You’ve really got to feel for Bertrand Berry. The man has been a true pro since he’s been with the Cardinals. A pro with horrible luck.
