Reynolds hits the record books, and not in a good way

By Vince Marotta, September 25th, 2008 2:56 PM

It only took 132 years, but someone has reached the 200 strikeout in a season plateau. It’s none other than the Diamondbacks’ . Joel Pineiro struck out Reynolds swinging in the second inning, giving him the magic number. Reynolds also struck out looking in the 7th.

Reynolds can take solace in that Ryan Howard, a candidate for the National League MVP Award is right on his heels. Howard has 196 on the season.

Interesting facts about Reynolds’ “feat”

  • Games in which Reynolds did not strike out : 31
  • Games in which Reynolds has struck out at least one time : 117
  • Games in which Reynolds struck out more than once: 63
  • Games in which Reynolds struck out at least three times: 15
  • Games in which Reynolds wore the “Golden Sombrero” (4 strikeouts): 4
  • Longest streak without striking out (games): 3
  • Longest streak with at least one strikeout (games): 17 (twice)
  • I’m not poking fun at Reynolds; I found some of these numbers intersting, and after all, he did make history on Thursday afternoon.

On the flip side, He carried the Diamondbacks offensively during their hot start this season. He had 24 rbis in April alone, when Arizona was 19-8 and considered the best team in baseball. Without Reynolds, there would have been no intrigue at all for the last month of the season. He still has an outside shot to become only the 4th player in Arizona history to drive in 100 or more runs. His development is crucial for a team that appears it won’t ever be a major player for big name free agents. But has that development been stalled by a couple of nightmarish statistics?

I’m concerned that a player who hasn’t spent a day in Triple-A, has struck out 200+ times and committed 34 errors. That has to have an effect on a young man’s confidence. I hope his confidence isn’t shaken so much that it effects him next year and into the future of his Diamondback career.
