So the Arizona Diamondbacks are just like us, and are watching the Major League Playoffs from the comfort of our own homes. But that doesn’t mean that the state of Arizona isn’t represented in the postseason.
First, there are 6 (technically) former Diamondbacks still playing:
- Craig Counsell - Milwaukee Brewers - played with the Diamondbacks from 2000-2003 and again from 2005 through 2006. Won the MVP of the 2001 NLCS, and was a main cog in the Diamondbacks’ only World Championship in 2001.
- Chad Durbin - Philadelphia Phillies - Durbin pitched in all of 7 games for the D-Backs in the forgettable season of 2004, posting an ERA of 8.68.
- Dioner Navarro - Tampa Bay Rays - technically, he never played for the Diamondbacks, but he was their property. He was acquired by the Diamondbacks in 2005 in the deal that sent Randy Johnson to New York. Later the same day, he was dealt to the Dodgers in the trade that brought Shawn Green to the Valley.
- Carlos Quentin - Chicago White Sox - The Diamondbacks had lost patience in Quentin, and traded him to the White Sox after the 2007 season. Quentin responded by putting up MVP-like numbers for the playoff-bound Sox.
- Jeff Suppan - Milwaukee Brewers - Suppan was the 3rd pick in the 1997 expansion draft by the Diamondbacks, and pitched 13 games for them in their inaugural season of 1998, before having his contract purchased by the Royals. While pitching for the Cardinals in 2006, Suppan was named the NLCS MVP for the eventual World Champs.
- Javier Vasquez - Chicago White Sox - Vasquez spent the 2005 season with the D-Backs after being part of the Randy Johnson trade. He was traded to the Sox in the trade that brought Chris Young to Arizona.
Four players with ties to ASU are gunning for a World Series ring:
- Andre Ethier - Los Angeles Dodgers - The former Sun Devil and St. Mary’s Knight enjoyed a great season in L.A.
- Prince Fielder - Milwaukee Brewers - The world’s heftiest vegetarian never played in Tempe, but was a member of the heralded 2002 recruiting class of Pat Murphy that was ranked the best in the country by some publications. Fielder was picked in the first round of the 2002 draft, and opted to go pro.
- Jon Lester - Boston Red Sox - Before he was well-known for throwing a no-hitter for the BoSox, Lester also was a 2002 recruit of Arizona State, but opted for pro ball after being selected in the 2nd round by Boston.
- Dustin Pedroia - Boston Red Sox - The A.L. MVP candidate played in Tempe for 3 seasons, from 2002 to 2004.
Several players who played their high school ball in Arizona are playing in the postseason:
- Brian Anderson - Chicago White Sox - Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson (and U of A)
- D.J. Carrasco - Chicago White Sox - Safford High School in Safford
- Andre Ethier - Los Angeles Dodgers - St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix
- J.J. Hardy - Milwaukee Brewers - Sabino High School in Tucson
- Bob Howry - Chicago Cubs - Deer Valley High School in Glendale
- Paul Konerko - Chicago White Sox - Chaparral High School in Scottsdale
- Brandon Wood - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - Horizon High School in Scottsdale
