University of Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson announced today that he will be taking another leave of absence this season, in order to help with the planning of his 3rd wedding.
Earlier this week, at a university fund raiser, Olson announced that he’s engaged to 47-year old Tucson resident Kelly Pugnea. Olson’s divorce from his second wife Christine Toretti became final in May.
Olson made headlines last winter when he announced he was taking a year off from coaching to deal with a personal matter that was not health related. Some time later, he announced that the leave to deal with a medical issue that was not life threatening.
Olson was visibly giddy when making the announcement of his latest leave earlier today.
“I’m going to be spending a good portion of the season interviewing potential wedding planners, sampling menus, and deciding whether we want a live band or a deejay. In a way, I’m recruiting again” the veteran coach said. “I just don’t have the time to devote to watching game film, traveling, and finding great looking tuxes. I’d much rather spend my time spooning with someone two-thirds my age, than yelling at kids one-fourth my age to follow their shots.”
Pugnea was asked by media members about her new relationship with Olson, and she stated that she will honor her commitment. “I’m here for four years. I’m not one and done, like that Jerryd Bayless kid.”
Olson said he’s still considering on who his best man will be, but he is certain that former U of A assistant and interim coach Kevin O’Neill will be in charge of valet services on the big day, which has yet to be finalized.
