Pac-10 Poll: Trojans remain on top

By Vince Marotta, October 13th, 2008 11:52 AM

Here’s the bright side…no Pac-10 team suffered and embarrassing non-conference loss. Of course, there were no non-conference games on the schedule this week. USC won by 28 but didn’t looke especially good in the process, and Washington State is beyond bad. The teams in between are just that…teams in between.

Here’s an updated look at how the teams of the conference stack up through week seven…

1. USC (4-1, 2-1)- Last week - #1 - Not overly impressive, but the Trojans did shut out Arizona State 28-0. The offense sputtered for much of the game, turning the ball over 5 times including a stretch of 4 turnovers in 4 possessions in the 3rd quarter. Two of those turnovers occurred deep in Trojan territory, and yet, USC still didn’t surrender a point. Was it USC’s strength, or ASU’s ineptitude? Probably a combination of both.

2. California (4-1, 2-0) - Last week - #2 - The Bears were on a bye week so they stand pat at #2, despite the fact that they are in sole possession of first place in the Pac-10.

3. Oregon (5-2, 3-1) - Last week - #4 - Jeremiah Masoli didn’t have a great day throwing the ball, but was a huge threat on the ground, gaining 170 yards and a touchdown in a 31-24 win over UCLA. LaGarrette Blount bounced back with a strong game as well, gaining 111 yards on just 7 carries, including 2 touchdowns. The 2nd, a 69-yard jaunt late in the ballgame put the game on ice for Oregon. Mike Bellotti has to be concerned that Oregon only had 42 yards through the air, but quarterback Justin Roper should return from an injury to shore up the passing game.

4. Stanford (4-3, 3-1) - Last week - #6 - Down by 6 late in the 4th quarter with your third string quarterback is not an enviable task for anybody to be in, but that’s exactly where Stanford found themselves on Saturday. Alex Loukas took over and ran for 32 yards on Stanford’s eventual winning drive which was capped off by Toby Gerhart’s 1-yard touchdown run. Stanford isn’t flashy, but they can run the ball, and they just keep winning.

5. Oregon State (3-3, 2-1) - Last week - #5 - The Beavers became the latest Pac-10 team to walk all over Washington State, pounding the Cougars 66-13. But it could have been worse. Quarterback Lyle Moevao threw 4 interceptions, including one in the WSU end zone, and another that was returned for a touchdown by Louis Bland. That’s a 14-point swing right there. So I guess the score should have been 73-7, but I guess it doesn’t really matter.

6. Arizona (4-2, 2-1) - Last week - #3 - Experts thought that Arizona’s defense could susceptible to the run, and they were right. Stanford rolled up 286 yards on the ground in their 24-23 win. Arizona had the advantage of facing a 3rd string QB for the last drive of the game, and couldn’t stop Stanford. The vaunted Arizona offense only generated one offensive touchdown in the ball game, and somehow the ‘Cats lost despite being +3 on turnovers. Weird loss, and it could be the beginning of a downward spiral for Arizona.

7. UCLA (2-4, 1-2) - Last week - #7 - I still believe it…UCLA is improving, and put up a pretty good fight Saturday night in Eugene. Kevin Craft had a decent game, but the running game took a step back from its recent progress, gaining only 63 yards. The Bruins did dominate time of possession, almost 38 to 22. However, Rick Neuheisel’s team does not move in this week’s poll.

8. Arizona State (2-4, 1-2) - Last week - #8 - Arizona State now qualifies as the biggest disappointment in the country. Some thought they might challenge USC for the Pac-10 title, and instead the Sun Devils got sand kicked in their face by the Trojans all day long on Saturday in a 28-0 loss. The Sun Devils woeful offense couldn’t take advantage of 5 USC turnovers. In fact, in the 3rd quarter stretch where USC coughed it up on 4 consecutive possessions, ASU responded by gaining a total of 3 yards, and having two field goals blocked. It’s a total mess in Tempe, and a bye week is coming at a good time for the Sun Devils.

9. Washington (0-5, 0-3) - Last week - #9 - The Huskies had the week off, which sadly has turned into a moral victory in Seattle.

10. Washington State (1-6, 0-4) - Last week - #10 - YUCK! Another blowout loss in the conference. Facing the Cougars defense is a lot like taking out Paris Hilton for a night. It’s not a matter of if you will score, it’s a matter of how often (and who will hold the camera!) The Cougars have been outscored 223-33 in 4 Pac-10 games this year, and have yet to face USC–that comes this week. Wazoo got bumrushed again on Saturday 66-13 at Oregon State. It’s the third time they’ve surrendered 60+ points in a game this year.

Predictions for Week 8:

  • USC 58, Washington State 0 . Pete Carroll’s humanity will be tested this week in Pullman.
  • UCLA 24, Stanford 23. Most interesting game of the weekend sees the Bruins nip the Cardinal in the Rose Bowl.
  • Oregon State 38, Washington 10 . Washington will win one game the rest of the year. This won’t be it.
  • California 30, Arizona 21. Jahvid Best returns and will run wild on suspect Wildcats’ run ‘d’.
  • Oregon and Arizona State have byes.

Prediction results last week: 4-0.
