Damned if you do, damned if you don’t

By Vince Marotta on October 7th, 2008

Photo: Eliot J. Schechter/Getty ImagesOk, here's the situation...you're Cardinal season ticket holder, and have two primo seats for Sunday's game vs. America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys. If you go to the game, you realize there's a good chance that the Cardinals lose to one of the best teams in the NFL, and the ribbing you'll take [...]

Breaking down Sun Devils’ broken-down offense

By Vince Marotta on October 6th, 2008

I'll preface everything in this piece by informing you I've never played or coached organized football. Since that's the first thing out of the mouths of players or coaches who are criticized, let's just get that out of the way right now. I've studied the sport, though. As I sat and watched ASU fall behind 24 [...]

Pac-10 Poll: USC flexes muscles

By Vince Marotta on October 6th, 2008

Even though the non-conference games are few and far between at this point in the season, the Pac-10 still isn't missing any opportunities to fall all over themselves. Oregon State and Stanford both had road non-cons this past weekend, and they both lost. Admittedly, they were both tough games...OSU lost on Thursday night at unbeaten [...]

Cardinals take apart Buffalo

By Vince Marotta on October 5th, 2008

Photo: James P. McCoy/Buffalo News After a complete meltdown last week in a 56-35 loss to the New York Jets, the Arizona Cardinals were the ones inflicting the pain this week. Kurt Warner threw 2 touchdown passes to Larry Fitzgerald, and rookie running back Tim Hightower found the end zone twice, as the Cardinals breezed to a [...]

ASU’s descent continues

By Vince Marotta on October 4th, 2008

Photo: Ben Margot/AP To call Arizona State's offense vanilla, would be an insult to vanilla. ASU's offense has all the flavor of a communion wafer, and that lack of flair was never more evident than in Saturday's 24-14 loss to California in Berkeley. The Sun Devils continually tried to establish their running game despite the fact that they [...]

More fuel for Boldin contract feud

By Vince Marotta on October 3rd, 2008

For the past five days, seemingly everyone has forgotten about Anquan Boldin's off-season and training camp squawking about wanting a new contract. Unfortunately, it took one of the most violent collisions in recent NFL memory to change people's focus. Boldin is fine after being bludgeoned by Jets' safety Eric Smith in the waning moments of the Cardinals' [...]

Crucial matchup for Devils, Bears

By Vince Marotta on October 2nd, 2008

In a conference that was completely turned upside down by Oregon State's shocking upset win over USC one week ago, this Saturday's matchup between Arizona State and California holds a lot of importance in determining how the Pac-10 standings will look in early December. Outside of last year's 31-20 win, some ASU's ugliest recent performances have [...]

Arizona well represented in MLB postseason

By Vince Marotta on October 1st, 2008

Photo: Jae C. Hong/AP So the Arizona Diamondbacks are just like us, and are watching the Major League Playoffs from the comfort of our own homes. But that doesn't mean that the state of Arizona isn't represented in the postseason. First, there are 6 (technically) former Diamondbacks still playing: Craig Counsell - Milwaukee Brewers - played with the Diamondbacks [...]

ASU loses Munns for the season

By Vince Marotta on October 1st, 2008

Bad news for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Linebacker Gerald Munns, who was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week following the Devils' win over Stanford, will miss the rest of the season for personal reasons. Munns' absence creates even bigger problems for a defense that has struggled mightily to make things happen. [...]

Diamondbacks face many questions in offseason

By Vince Marotta on September 30th, 2008

Photo: Gene J. Puskar/AP When you look at the final numbers, and see an 82-80 record, and a second place finish 2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, you'd immediately consider 2008 a success for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Not so quick. Bob Melvin's team led the division from April 6th to September 5th. That's 136 games, or [...]

NFL hands out swift justice for Jets’ Smith

By Vince Marotta on September 29th, 2008

Photo: Mel Evans/AP Eric Smith, the New York Jets' safety, was given a 1-game suspension and fined $50,000 today by the NFL. Smith launched himself head first into Cardinals' receiver Anquan Boldin's helmet, breaking up a potential touchdown pass in the waning moments of the Jets' 56-35 win over Arizona on Sunday. Boldin laid motionless on the field [...]

Despite losing, USC still #1 in the Pac

By Vince Marotta on September 29th, 2008

There's not another conference in the country that is more upside down than the Pac-10 right now. The only certainty was that nobody was going to touch USC. Well they got touched alright. They got downright fondled in Corvallis by Oregon State. No other real surprises this week in the Fanster Pac-10 Power [...]

D-Backs end with win, Johnson gets #295

By Vince Marotta on September 28th, 2008

Photo: Doug Pensinger/AP The Skinny: It took a Herculean 9-inning, 2-hit effort, but Randy Johnson finally got his 295th career win with a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the first when Clint Barmes scored on a wild pitch. Barmes had reached base leading off the game on a [...]

Worst day in Cardinals history?

By Vince Marotta on September 28th, 2008

Photo: Bill Kostroun/AP New York Jets' quarterback Brett Favre threw 6 touchdown passes, and their defense forced 7 turnovers in a 56-35 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Normally when a team gets thoroughly dominated, physically and mentally, there's a lot to pick apart. And there is. But it all gets put on the back burner, [...]

By Vince Marotta on September 26th, 2008

Photo:Ross D. Franklin/AP The Skinny: Chad Tracy doubled to right field scoring Chris Burke and Jeff Salazar, breaking a 4-4 tie, and giving the Arizona Diamondbacks a 6-4 over the Colorado Rockies in the first of a 3-game series at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks fell behind 3-0, but fought their way back starting with Justin Upton's [...]

D-Backs playing out the string vs. Rockies

By Vince Marotta on September 26th, 2008

Well, the season's all over, save the accumulation of statistics, and fan appreciation day. The Diamondbacks, who entered the month of September with a 2.5 game lead in the National League West, simply collapsed in the last month, and actually trail by 4 games heading into this weekend's meaningless series with the Colorado Rockies. In [...]

The final nail in the coffin…

By Vince Marotta on September 25th, 2008

Photo: The Canadian Press The Skinny: With the Los Angeles Dodgers possessing a magic number of one, you might figure that the Diamondbacks would play with renewed passion on Thursday and at least force L.A. to win the National League West on their own accord on Thursday night. That didn't happen. The St. Louis Cardinals' big 3 [...]

Reynolds hits the record books, and not in a good way

By Vince Marotta on September 25th, 2008

It only took 132 years, but someone has reached the 200 strikeout in a season plateau. It's none other than the Diamondbacks' Mark Reynolds. Joel Pineiro struck out Reynolds swinging in the second inning, giving him the magic number. Reynolds also struck out looking in the 7th. Reynolds can take solace in that Ryan Howard, [...]

Is anybody more snakebitten than Bertrand Berry?

By Vince Marotta on September 25th, 2008

Photo: Getty Images/Lisa Blumenfeld Bertrand Berry may have set an NFL record for the most consecutive seasons tearing a muscle. His streak has hit a Ripken-esque 4 years now as the Cardinals announced Thursday that Berry has a torn groin muscle (cringing), and will be out indefinitely. In 2004, Berry had a great season, his first in [...]

By Vince Marotta on September 24th, 2008

Photo: AP/Tom Gannam Cesar Izturis' sac fly scored Aaron Miles, breaking a 2-2 tie and lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondacks at Busch Stadium on Wednesday. The loss shrunk the Los Angeles Dodgers' magic number to two games in the National League West race. The Cardinals jumped on St. [...]

Webb should win Cy Young…history backs it up

By Vince Marotta on September 24th, 2008

The Arizona Diamondbacks trail the L.A. Dodgers by 3 games with 5 left to play, so it would take not only a colossal choke job by the Dodgers, but the Diamondbacks would basically have to win all 5--something they've achieved only once this season, and that was back in May! So really, the only intrigue left in the [...]

And that oughta do it…

By Vince Marotta on September 23rd, 2008

The Skinny: Ryan Ludwick jacked a 3-run home run off of Randy Johnson in the bottom of the first inning, capping a 4-run frame, and propelling the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Albert Pujols had started the scoring with an rbi single that scored [...]
