By Vince Marotta on July 24th, 2008

Pac-10 Media Day is unfolding today in Los Angeles, and to no one's surprise, Southern California was picked by the conference media to win the conference. The Trojans of head coach Pete Carroll received 38 of 39 first place votes. Cal was the only other team to receive a first place vote, although they were [...]

Is Emmitt tarnishing his legend?

By Vince Marotta on July 23rd, 2008

Many football purists shuttered when Emmitt Smith, the career Dallas Cowboy, and the NFL's all-time leading rusher opted to sign with the Arizona Cardinals to finish his career. Smith played two years for the Cardinals, and in his final season, 2004, he actually performed admirably, running for 937 yards and 9 touchdowns. Yet, still most [...]

By Vince Marotta on July 23rd, 2008

Photo: AP/Matt York

Arizona State linebacker Mike Nixon has had an interesting sports career to say the least. He's been a multi-sport high school star, a minor league baseball player, and a key contributor to a major college football program. That's versatility. His next show of versatility though, might take the cake. This season Mike [...]

Diamondbacks punish Cubs 9-2

By Vince Marotta on July 22nd, 2008

Monday night, hits and runs were hard to come by for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tuesday they were a lot easier to come by. Conor Jackson, for the second time in this home stand, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to get the offensive wheels turning, and the D-Backs cruised [...]

The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired right-handed reliever Jon Rauch from the Washington Nationals in exchange for second baseman Emilio Bonifacio. Rauch was the Nats' closer, and had a 4-2 record with 17 saves in 22 opportunities and a 2.98 ERA. Rauch, a 6-year veteran, is 29 years old, and is the tallest pitcher in Major [...]

Johnson, D-Backs blank Cubbies 2-0

By Vince Marotta on July 21st, 2008

Randy Johnson came into Monday's game against the Chicago Cubs with a career record of 12-0 vs. the Northsiders. Factoring in that the 44-year old Johnson has been shaky at times over the last couple of months, and that the Cubs are the National League's best offense, one might expect a '1' to appear in the [...]

Tucker shines in Summer League

By Vince Marotta on July 21st, 2008

Last season we saw that Alando Tucker could excel in the D-League. Now we've seen him light it up in the NBA Summer League. Tucker, who's going into his second season out of Wisconsin, averaged a team-high 21.6 points per game in the Suns' 5 games. He ranked 4th in the league in scoring, [...]

Cubs (and their fans) invade Chase

By Vince Marotta on July 21st, 2008

When the Chicago Cubs make their annual trek to Chase Field, it inevitably cranks up the energy level at the airplane hangar-ish looking ballpark in the desert. That's what is on tap for the next three nights in downtown Phoenix...high energy, two first-place teams competing, and a whole lot of Cubs' fans taking up seats at [...]

Bullpen, defense snatch 14th win from Webb

By Vince Marotta on July 20th, 2008

It was business as usual for 8 innings for Brandon Webb and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Webb held the Los Angeles Dodgers in check for those 8 innings, allowing just 1 run, and exiting with a 4-1 lead after throwing 109 pitches. He was only 3 outs away from earning his 14th [...]

D-Backs hang on, beat Dodgers 3-2

By Vince Marotta on July 19th, 2008

Dan Haren is really good. That about says it all. Conor Jackson jump started the Diamondbacks offense with a solo homer in the first, followed by an rbi ground rule double by Chad Tracy, and Haren pretty much did the rest over the next 7 innings. Haren pitched shutout ball, allowing just [...]

Second half starts with a visit from the Dodgers

By Vince Marotta on July 18th, 2008

After one of the better All-Star Games in recent memory, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the rest of the Majors are back at it tonight. The D-Backs, owners of a scant 1-game lead in the National League West, host the team they lead by that 1 game, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks started shuffling their [...]

Lue says no to Suns…again

By Vince Marotta on July 16th, 2008

Backup point guard Tyronn Lue, who earlier this off-season, seemed like a lock to be donning the purple and orange as Steve Nash's backup next season, today signed a 2-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. In the grand scheme of things, it's not really a big deal. Lue is a journeyman, an insurance policy. The [...]

Arrivederci Brandon!

By Vince Marotta on July 16th, 2008

It's official. The one-time 2008 recruiting jewel of the Arizona Wildcats, Brandon Jennings, has put his John Hancock on a contract with Vitrus Roma Pallacanestro of the Italian League. Some are painting Jennings as a trail blazer, a player who found a way to circumvent the already laughable rule that mandates a player spend [...]

The Ex-Diamondbacks All-Star team

By Vince Marotta on July 15th, 2008

Photo: AP/Duane Burleson You can't go a day without some Diamondback fan muttering under their breath something to the effect of "stupid Diamondbacks. Gave away Carlos Quentin for nothing." Carlos Quentin will be making his All-Star debut tonight at Yankee Stadium, representing the Chicago White Sox. Quentin has had a wonderful first half of the [...]

By Vince Marotta on July 13th, 2008

Pat Burrell cracked a 3-run home run in the 8th inning off of Diamondbacks' reliever Chad Qualls, breaking a 2-2 tie, and fueling the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-2 victory Sunday at Citizens Bank Park. Brandon Webb started the game for Arizona, and once again pitched well, going 7 innings while allowing 7 hits and 2 runs and [...]

D-Backs blast Phillies 10-4

By Vince Marotta on July 12th, 2008

The Arizona Diamondbacks got their biggest single-inning offensive output of the season in the 4th against the Philadelphia Phillies, and it was more than enough to propel them to an 10-4 win Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. The fourth start out innocently enough, as Mark Reynolds flied out to left and Chris Young was retired on on a [...]

By Vince Marotta on July 11th, 2008

Jayson Werth singled in So Taguchi in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the Philadelphia Phillies a 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Park. For the second straight game, the Diamondbacks' bullpen couldn't hold a late lead. This time the pen faltered in the 8th. Doug Slaten started the inning, pitching with [...]

First place teams collide as D-Backs visit Phils

By Vince Marotta on July 11th, 2008

The Arizona Diamondbacks close out the first half of the season with 3 games against another first place National League team, the Philadelphia Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love. It'll be a classic case of hitting vs. pitching, as Philly boasts the last two NL MVPs in their lineup in Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins, [...]

D-Backs win a wild one in DC

By Vince Marotta on July 10th, 2008

You wouldn't expect too many fireworks when two of the worst offensive teams in baseball get together. There was a plethora of them, especially starting in the 9th inning. The Diamondbacks, despite blowing 2 leads, won a crazy game in Washington, 7-5 over the Nationals. Dan Haren was, in a word, brilliant on the mound Thursday [...]

Nationals paste D-Backs 5-0

By Vince Marotta on July 9th, 2008

The Arizona Diamondbacks continued playing ugly baseball in the nation's capitol, and it led to another loss on Wednesday night. Jesus Flores' 3-run pinch-hit home run off of Connor Robertson highlighted a 4-run 6th inning, and lifted the Washington Nationals to a 5-0 victory over the Diamondbacks. Micah Owings returned to the starting rotation for the first [...]

Barry to D-Backs?

By Vince Marotta on July 9th, 2008

Barry Bonds, facing eventual Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy, flied out to center fielder Brady Clark for the third out in the 6th inning of an 11-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. Seems pretty innocuous, considering the never ending list of accomplishments and accolades Bonds had compiled in his career. But it was significant. [...]
