Congratulation Devils

03/26/08 11:45 PM

James HardenThe season is over for the Arizona men’s basketball team.  They lost by thirteen points at home against the University of Florida.

The Sun Devils started the game off ugly, as the Gators jumped to a 17-3 lead.  ASU slowly worked their way back throughout the game, and even managed to take a two point lead on a Jerren Shipp 3-point shot in the second half.  James Harden then got his fourth foul on a questionable call trying to take a charge, and Florida took over from there.

Florida, however, really torched Arizona State’s zone the whole night.  Other than the game at Washington State, no team had exposed the defense like this.  The Gators used great ball movement, and knocked down 12-25 three-point shots.  Ty Abbott and Rihards Kuksiks were especially guilty, allowing many open shots from the corner.  ASU would likely have been much better off in a man-to-man defense, but since they had been an exclusively match up zone defense throughout the season, that adjustment was impossible.  Herb Sendek will likely have his team play at least some man-to-man next season (I will go deeper into this in a future post).

Going to Madison Square Garden would have been such a great experience for the team, but it was not to be.  They did outdo the expectations most people had for them this season, and finished 5th in the Pac10.  2007-2008 could be a turning point for Sun Devil basketball, and that is something the team and fans should be proud of.  Way to go Devils!
